no general who has capitulated for what ever reason should be given the chance to lead and that goes for nana . we shall tell all our sympathizers to abstain and boycott the next elections as we insist on a radical leader who will never surrender . if we are ready to fight to the death then our leaders should also recognize this value and not throw in the towel , we need no cowards or schemers . it takes courage and wisdom to lead and nana lacks both. we were soo disappointed he did not take the fight to the streets and again he disappoints us by not stepping aside . the stakes are now much higher than before as if he wins it confirms that last elections were rigged and should have continued the fight , if he looses if confirms he led the whole country on a jolly ride for his own selfish power hungry agenda . its a loose loose situation with no respect or dignity . nana has outmaneuvered himself into pepeni's hands and for the first time in 2 years pepeni is actually celebrating as any political analysis can see nana has shot in himself not only in one leg but both . he thinks he has a well marketed name and is well known so stands a better chance than any other candidate and because pepeni's govt due to northern tribalism is weak but he forgets the Akan are industrious hardworking people so with or without pepeni before the end of the year things will start getting better as the Akan have now reorganized their business away from the influence of politics . in short pepeni will start seeing successes and as usual will lie and attribute them to his govt . the business minded have rallied around and are doing things for the people despite the corruption in the system . the corrupt ones are now even becoming more reasonable and not asking for payment in advance so the business works out although the amounts they want have increased enormously . pepeni will succeed and will get a second mandate as he realizing his mistake is focusing more on the competent ones and more sustainable projects that help retain the wealth of the nation with the people . nana forgets the majority of the people now know only a Ghana with jj and the ndc so are conditioned to matter what if there are 2 evils to go for the evil they already know . this time pepeni will get 70% of the vote as many will not even bother with the exercise , there is nothing new

“Second, the Mahama government is facing very serious problems/difficulties (challenges as they prefer) in managing the economy and the country. Corruption is the order of the day and lawlessness is the norm rather than exception.”
There is no time in the contemporary history of Ghana politics where governments have had zero problems, where there was no lawlessness. Ghanaians are no respecters of laws and discipline. In fact, I can’t remember any such time. It means Akufo-Addo as president can’t have a fiat lux disposition or magic wand to put an abrupt end to difficulties and problems in Ghana. The problems as we see today are cumulative leftovers from the past and successive lethargic administrations. If the current trend rages on without serious attempts at redress and change in policies, there’s every factual indication Akufo-Addo will inherit a much worse situation than we have presently.
On the other hand the perception of malfeasance and corruption took a higher turn since NPP lost the presidential elections. The opposition party which would not easily and humbly digest it loss detests even more other political parties in power other than its flagbearers and uses every trump card to escalate public sentiments about corruption and the dire situation in the country as if everything started a day after the elections. The members of the party continue to poke the fire by maintaining assertions in the media. Didn’t NPP officials swear after the elections they would make the country very ungovernable for Mahama? Some even said they would not recognize Mahama as president. This kind of thought ensued in behavior levels where so many people just completely became intentionally uncontrollable in the manifestation antics that disregard discipline and laws of the country in every field of endeavor. The result is strife.
Corruption and difficulties have always been present in the life of Ghanaians.
“The government moves from one crisis to another and there appears to be no strategic vision for the short, medium and long terms solutions but only haphazard responses by ministers and government appointees.”
This has always been the case every time in Ghana. It is difficult to recall when there hasn’t been day to day crises overpowering our governments, each overwhelming. There has never been any strategic vision at all in any government in Ghana in recent time – “recent” stretching to 1992. It there was, actual situation would have been much mitigated. The poor citizens just put up with it while the governments play the ostrich and make it appear as if something good is happening when most of us know better. Kufuor’s government even had more constriction from individual polemics and scandals that made a total mockery of the government ability to be discerning and objective.
Finally, Akufo-Addo will NOT do better. If he could, he shouldn’t have waited after Kufuor’s 8 years when NPP had the chances to give us back our country, long squeezed and defaced under NDC. In actual fact Akufo-Addo may most likely worsen the present situation.
He was the Attorney General and the amount of cocaine that entered in the country under his supervision was colossal. In 2008 it was rumored his preparations for the electoral standoff also saw the preparation for a massive position adopted to continue the cocaine trade as some musicians were told to prepare to become millionaires. We were not surprised when he mobilized all the musicians in the country for his campaign. Mills knew better.
Akufo-Addo was the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Under his watch Ghana passports were traded to delinquents in carceral institutions in Asia. In Italy Ghana passports were sold to prostitutes and other West Africans. In Ghana journalists pretending to be UK business contractors went directly to the MoFA and made passports in 12/24 hour periods, some even making passports in the name of the then President and Vice President, Kufuor and Aliu. So who says Akufo-Addo will do better?
There is a case against him: he is said to have murdered his kinsman. Akufo-Addo insulted Ghanaians by his refusal to utter even a word on that and others things he is accused of, making most of us believe he is as guilty as his accuser said. It will be a disgrace if as a president he is tormented in the foreign media in the west when he will be made to answer on those daring accusations. That would be very revealing, and will mark us for long. Since the affair was raised by Kpegah, I have read so many people on Ghanaweb attesting to have known something about the murder case, some even saying they would be available to testify against him, meaning it is not a hidden case after all.
NPP would do better finding someone else if they believe they have the intelligence to elect some other person. That should be their challenge.

Kofi, the motive you are ascribing as to why Nana Addo went to court are just presumptions.
I will say going to court was useful in the sense that the flaws of our electoral system were laid bare. Why in heaven’s name would an EC order two identical sets of pink sheets and release both into the elections? This should be worrying to any country embarking on the democratic journey. Why portions of electoral records, meant to check anomalies are unfilled should be worrying; and why electoral officers would not sign their own records should also be worrying.
I have analysed the entire electoral records from all our elections from 1992 and I am convinced that Nana Addo and co. had enough reasons to file the petition. The format of the reliefs they sought is prescribed by our electoral petition laws and was not dreamt up by the petitioners.
From my analysis of all our elections, the 2012 election was simply rigged. The rigging was not by stealing from the NPP, but it was by stealing from the minor parties who could not afford agents at all polling stations. In polling stations all over the country, it is astonishing how the minority presidential votes collapsed compared to their parliamentarians.
The difference between minority parliamentary votes and that of presidential votes was about 500,000. The odd thing is that this difference ‘en bloc’ went to John Mahama. It was as if the nation was overwhelmingly yearning for a Mahama Presidency.
This cannot be true when the pattern is repeated in region after region (in all 10 regions). It has never happened before in our elections, even in 2000, when the nation was so eager to see the back of the then NDC government.
What you are pointing out are the bye-products of going to court rather than the principal reason for doing so. I, however, agree with you that a lot can change between now and 2016 and the NPP will regret it if they assumed that the incumbent president cannot up his game from the present shambles to win again.
But seriously I do not see the wherewithal for them to change things massively. They are constrained by the bad shape of the economy. They cannot go on the borrowing spree again without our so-called development partners withdrawing the little bit of support they are giving us now.

My senior I tend to read your postings on SIL and they are so informative. Your work is what SIL is for. In this instance I must disagree with you on some aspects of your posting.
I do agree that the petition exposed the serious flaws in our electoral system. The tendency of the bureaucracy to be inept is there for all to see. A lot of people think because you wear a suit and tie to work you are automatically good at your job. This is not the case and though some public servants are excellent and efficient, in some instances the reverse is true.
But I disagree with part of your posting as I believe the issue of electoral dynamics seems to disfavour Nana again. In 2008 he had the best chance to be elected but his campaign and over-confidence did him in. He should have run a grassroots campaign, he should have involved President Kufuor and he should have kept his immediate rival, Alan Kyerematen close to his chest. This is what Mills did - he Rawlings and Spio all played a role in bringing the party to power. Upon election he stabbed them in the back but that is another story. Mills knew that without Jerry he was no one. Unfortunately for Nana he did not have that belief and the rest is history
Come 2012 and Mills inept performance, I felt Nana was going to win but then sadly for him, Mills died and a more pleasant, acceptable person in the form of Mahama, came to the fore and as soon as that happened I knew Nana was finished.
Come 2016 and electing Nana leader will cause a defeat. First his age is a problem. The NDC will keep reminding us that he will be 81 years old and will still be in office if elected. This will have a chilling effect on floating voters who are not in awe of Nana unlike the party fanatics Second, he has not overcome the image issue.
Third, Mahama might be all over the place in the job but he is still a likeable person and can attract votes. This is something that NPP always fails to take into account.
A new face is so helpful in an election, especially against an incumbent government. That new face is Alan - likeable, personable etc. In this media age of image he is an electable candidate while Nana, sadly, is not

Hello Yaw,
Well, their petition was fundamentally flawed and wrongly filed. The verdict would have been different if NPP and the petitioners have asked for RE-RUN in areas they did not agree with the results.
You see, NPPers have long held the believe that they know the law. What we saw during the hearing of the petition was totally different - NPP lawyers were found wanting "asking for direction" from the SC Judges. As well, they had no credidle and or cogent facts to back up their petition - hence "you and I were not there". You and I were not there simply means, in my opinion that the petioners have no evidence of electoral malpractices and embelishment of numbers to favour NDC Presidential Candidate.

Yaw, I do not think I stated in the article that the petition was not useful, neither was I talking about the bye-products of the challenge. I discussed briefly the objective/s for the petition.
Regarding your analysis of 2012 elections and your conclusion that it was rigged, I do not intend to debate you on that, except to point out to you that your conclusion further betrays NPP's petition because throughout the petition, it was claimed that votes were stolen form Nana Akufo-Addo and given to President Mahama. I am sure in a decade or so, if this matter is revisited the reasons for the petition and or why Nana Akufo Addo lost the election would be something different and not stolen votes from minorities parties.
I am not sure from what did you conduct your analysis of 2012 elections. I know electoral materials in Ghana are protected and only the EC has access to them. I therefore guess that you analysed the results as reported by the EC on its website or perhaps "pink sheets from NPP. If it's the latter then your conclusion would have very serious deficit because the petitioners presented pink sheets from areas favourable to their petition. If it is the former, then I just cannot understand how you came by your conclusion. On the other hand, if you have had access to the original electoral materials from the EC, then I suggest you make your findings public with the data.

I have compared the total votes won by parliamentary candidates of the minor parties to total votes won by their corresponding presidential candidates.
There is a drop from parliamentary to presidential by 500,000 votes. This drop, instead of being shared between the two leading presidential candidates all went to John Mahama.
This was the main source of the extra votes Mahama got over NDC parliamentary candidates (some 410,000). This is not a coincidence - It was made to happen.
Such scale of 'en bloc' switching of votes has never happened before in our 4th republic. I am yet to have any reasons why it happened this way, other than the fact that these were the votes could easily be stolen.
By the way, the petitioners withdrew the claim of vote reduction. They were handicapped by the fact that the EC withheld information - another sign of a publicly funded body refusing to make available doucuments for public scrutiny. That action speaks volumes.
I have this published on Isuu download website. I called it Ghana Election Statistics. You can search to download.

Yaw, you and I know that when it comes to the minority parties many of their voters were fully aware that their Presidential candidate/s has no chance of winning the Presidency but because personal and local connection/s with the parliamentary candidate/s, they opted to vote skirt and blouse. Just imagine a candidate such as Ayariga in the last election. At one point, I wondered if he was doing Mahama's bidding so it was obvious that many his party members ended up voting for Mahama. That could explain why the the presidential votes for minority parties collapsed.
I am afraid the results as announced and published the EC could hardly be a good source for analysis such as yours and for valid, reliable and objective conclusions to be drawn, except to use your own words, presumptuous. A reliable methodology would be a combination of the results and interviews (interviewing minority party voters in those constituencies where such collapse of their votes occurred, in the absence of access to the raw electoral materials (pink sheets) from the EC.

What an empty and hollow so called analysis. I´m not going to try to get into details of this so called analysis. But there is one thing that this writer has not taken notice. Do not be decieved! The fact that Nana accepted the court´s verdict does not necessarily means he did so because he found it to be the right thing to do. Infact, he accepted the verdict because this man has no other choice. Perhaps, he would have been dead by now if he had tried anything stupid after the court´s decissions.
Now, what has changed about this man? Can somebody tell Ghanaians what has changed about him? His first statement is, "next time, we will not go to the Court if I lost the elections in 2016". Where then will they go? To resort to unrest and killings right? They have already set it out in motion, as they have said from the very day he disgracefully lost the elections. One thing that many people have failed to take note of, is the fact that Nana is closely behind every dirty trick that is taking place in this country. Even his own party members know about that. This is the man who is always supporting his Akyem mafias against anyone who dares to bring him to his sense. Infact, this man has systematically tried and silence all those who he percieved as a threat to his presidential ambitions within his own party. Who said this man is not fully aware of everything that goes on within the NPP!
Now, has this writer taken into account credibility issues affecting this man? Or he wants to tell us that Ghanaians don´t care who they elect as president, regardless of his background? If really Nana wants to be taken serious and eventually become president of this country, then he needs to start working on his personal image right now. As to whether he can be able to do that within 10 years, I´m not too sure. There are too many skeletons in this man´s cupboard. I´m not going to mention them because this writer knows about it and everybody else. President Mahama, may not be perfect, but it is not Akufo Addo´s government that is the solutions. His dogs are urging him to become president for just one thing.-To get position within his government to loot and Lord it over Ghanaians. They are not yet in power but have over the years, demonstrated and shown the sort of people they are. Isn´t it interesting and pathetic that Nana is still holding himself up as if he is the president of this country though hs actions? Ghanaians are not fools and are taking notes of every move by this character called Akufo Addo. Come 2016, he will be consigned to a bad histroy.

This writer's analysis clearly points to the fact that ND C and Mahama will win again without difficulties as some would say "cool chop for NDC"
In his first ill-analysis by using the supreme court judgement on the election petition to state that it makes it an advantageous way for Nana Addo to win is neither here nor there. The election petition even portrays how hot-headed he is and how desperate he wants to be the president. Based on your so-called analysis, he knew very well that he genuinely lost the 2012 election but in order to prepare himself for 2016 election he then took it to court. This tells you and many electorates how mischievous and deceitful he is. You take an issue to court knowing very well that you are wrong side to waste state money and human energy and then later come back to me to beg for my vote, who will listen to you?
Another funny analysis is running to London in order to avoid internal/external problems of the party. This also tells you and many people that he is somebody who can't solve problems rather avoiding them. So giving the nation problems
to him in 2016 as the president he will always run to London in order to avoid them. Can you imaging solving dumsor problem in the country, you must phone him in london before he can tell you what to do? Tweaaa

Hello Mr. Ata & Mr. & Mrs. Ghana,
In my opinion, Nana Akufo Addo is the most credible candidate to among the lot to lead NPP. However, fancy the following questions: Will pay back time play against Nana Akufo Addo in 2016 Presidential Election? Will NPPers rally behind him to cruise to victory? Will 1979 repeat itself - when Nana Akufo Addo counselled his uncle PAA WILLIE to break away from PFP to form UNC? Will a faction of NPP vote against Nana Akufo Addo if the 2016 Presidential Election goes 2nd round pitting John Mahama against Nana Akufo Addo as we saw in 1979, when UNCers including Nana Akufo Addo rallied and campaigned for Dr. Hilla Limann to defeat PFPer VICTOR OWUSU, aka Kwadwo Pie? Are the Asantes still habouring the feelings that, had it not been for Nana Akufo Addo's instrumentality, their legal luminary, the late Victor Owusu would have won the 1979 Presidential Election and would have become the first demoratically elected Asante President of Ghana? Will Nana Akufo Addo publicly apologize to Mr. Paul Afoko for asking and or allowing his BODYGUARD THUGS to MANHANDLE him at Legon in 2008?
You see, NPP is too deeply and SURREPTITIOUSLY divided to support Nana Akufo Addo to victory. I truly believe Nana Akufo Addo himself is aware of it. Without a collective support from within NPP, Nana Akufo Addo might be OBLITERATED into total submission in 2016 Presidential Election.

Ultimately, NDC will set its vicious smear election campaign at full throttle. Despite the Mahama-led NDC Government's glaring incompetence, and corruption scandals, I personally don't think NDC party will fear Nana Akufo-Addo as NPP's candidate. You don't need reminding that both in 2008 and 2012, when any 'likeable' NPP Presidential candidate could have won, the NDC campaign juggernaut simply crushed Nana Akufo-Addo. In 2012, the NDC Government under the ailing President Mills was virtually on the ropes but why did Nana Akufo-Addo fail to deliver the knockout blow to defeat the NDC party?
Given Nana Akufo-Addo's age, and let's even assume that Nana has plenty of energy, stamina and his health is good. Nana Akufo-Addo will be a septuagenarian by the 2016 Election, and the NDC would have plenty of ammo. Nana's age will unfortunately be an issue. This is one reason why I believe the NPP should rather be led by Dr Bawumia, a leader more likely to win 2016 Elections for NPP.
Nana Akufo-Addo lacks the appeal to attract floating voters and others outside the traditional NPP strongholds. I believe Nana Akufo-Addo should have exited the stage graciously, when the applause was loud.

LONTO-BOY, your views are always valued. I am still of the view that if at the time of the elections the economy is as bad as it is now, Nana Akufo-Addo has a greater chance of finally realising his long held presidential ambitions. In other words, my predictions are based on the current situation in Ghana.
I think one of the reasons why Nana Akufo-Addo lost in 2012 was that there was no plan B. When the team he was playing against changed Nana Addo continued to play the game and style as if it was the same team and when the music also changed he continued to dance to the same "panlogo" as if it was the same old tune. The death of of Mills and the arrival of Mahama as the candidate changed the the political landscape but Nana Addo and NPP did not even modify let alone change their strategy.
In 2008, it was overconfident or complacency that caused him the gold medal. In 2016, only time will tell.

If a half-hearted acceptance speech and a political hiatus can enable one to re-invent himself in the public eye then workers who misconduct themselves and get fired at their workplaces can easily get their jobs back. Don't misconstrue the enduring patience of Ghanaians for subjugation. When it comes to the presidency, Akufo Addo has an self-inflicted, wounded image to repair before he even steps on the base of the political ladder. NDC will always peg him back to do it even if he doesn't want to. That will be the tougher reality he will ever have to face as a politician

I love this article. Kofi was just spot on with his analysis especially the loose talk that he mentioned. That was one of the bane of NPP and could likely resurrect especially with Kennedy Aygapong still around. I would be very glad if people like Ken, Ursula, Kofi Juma, Awuku and those quick tempered politicians within NPP are not made the front line campaign members. Because the NDC would intentionally annoy these people and wait for bad response so as to use it as a propaganda tool against the NPP. So please Nana should you be elected once again to lead the party, be sure to chose a very formidable and tolerant members as your communicators and campaign team members. Be bold and quick to apologize and condemn when necessary for it does not take away any part of your body to do so. It would rather bring you sympathy votes from the floating voters.

Is Arthur Kennedy, the "stalking horse"candidate in the impending primaries?
I wonder who will emerge as the "dark knight"?
Age and history of Nana Addo will not favour him in the 2016 elections. He's lost his appeal to energise the populace to vote for him. Although he is still the most respected candidate for the NPP. Young and energetic candida ...
