If all what Mr Kofi Ata alleges is true, then a concrete plan of action is called forth to thwart this scheme.
Lonhro, historically, has been a shark (remember the era of Tiny Rowland), and this offensive I call for should preempt the bite but not await our feet getting caught in its mouth before we try to wiggle free.
As a general framework for action, I propose the following:
1) Formation of an Action Group that incorporates efforts by the 5 MPs
2) Informing Lonrho through appropriate legal means that the agreement they're signing contravenes the quoted "PNDCL. 160". This way, Lonrho can never plead ignorance to that provision and cannot sue Ghana for recovery of losses.... help needed here- any legal minds willing to help flesh all of this out?
3) Mass education of the citizens through all available media outlets
4) A monetary fund established through voluntary contributions to support the legal endeavours of the Valiant 5 and Action Group
5) Massive protests, if the Government subverts efforts at a fair legal resolution of the issue.

MASSA KOFI, I totally support the suit of the 5 MPs. We must not allow corruption to prevail over our national interest. I just can't think why Ghana's Parliament could approve such agreement between our Government and Lonrho Ports. It is very unwise to approve such agreement, which is so generous and favourable to Lonrho Ports. Such agreement could undermine the country's infrastructure development plans and economic growth.
This is yet another NDC cancer that will cost this country dear.

A very good piece, Kofi,
I suspect that the seeming stupidity of the Ghana Parliament particularly since the Mills/Mahama governments is a deliberate plan to siphon money off the poor Ghanaian taxpayer. I will bet my bottom penny that Lonrho was fronted/promoted by an NDC bigwig who has since received his/her "facilitator's fee" and closed his/her mind about whatever happens to Oman Ghana.
You mentioned the Kaiser/Valco Agreement for the construction of the Akosombo Dam. Sometimes some Nkrumaists try to malign those who opposed aspects of Nkrumah's development programme. The Kaiser Agreement was one of them. Ghana was going to export bauxite to Jamaica to be turned into aluminium ingots, which would then be imported and rolled in Ghana. Under such an arrangement, what chance was there for the "integrated aluminium industry" in Ghana?"
The Petroleum Revenues Act that was passed only a few years ago is having to be reviewed because industry experts believed at the time that it was full of gaping holes. When the opposition raised some of those issues, it was poopooed by the majority in Parliament, and the bill was passed.
STX, Kufuor's award of gold medals, Isofoton, Ms Coton's rice project, the purchase of overbloated Brear Aircraft in Brazil and all such diabolical agreements, were "approved" by Parliament! Until such a time that we have an independent or pressure group that studies ALL legislations/agreements that go through Ghana's parliament, generations unborn will continue to be saddled with such idiotic and fraudulent agreements!

The 5 MPs deserve our support and commendation. Those citizens from Atuabo are being deceived and must think of a wider Ghana!

From the information I have seen in the agreement that was posted on line and (I do not know whether this was in fact the one approved by parliament) the provisions of clause 7 do recognize the investments GPHA have made in Takoradi and the provisions for the expansion plans already funded which include one additional berth for the oil industry, and in doing so GPHA is not constrained totally but in the case of Atuabo Free Port there scope of activities is totally constrained in supporting the hydrocarbon industry. If we are to attract foreign investors to help us develop our nation then there has to be a balance of securing our economic beneficial rights whilst at the same time leaving enough on the table for the investors to get a return on their investment. Is this a position any different you would adopt if you invested your own money in a project?
But going to your point about the MP's in this case my understanding is two of them were in the parliamentary subcommittees that reviewed the agreement and were present on the day the agreement was debated I must say at some length of which these issues were raised. I know as I was there and listen to the debate all there hours of it.
So to suggest that these MP's are heroes I would question as in a democracy we have the opportunity to debate and question issues but ultimately in a democracy the opinion of the majority votes carries the day.
If you saw the voting there was but a mere whimper of nays when the speaker called for a vote.
So I am sorry my own opinion is that these MP's do not in fact respect the authority and decisions of a democratically elected parliament and they should be called to order and as a country we should allow this project to proceed without further delay so we can all benefit from the economic growth that it will bring.
