Mr. Ata it appears you are not very serious. Since when did you realize that she is not qualified for the job. According to your own statement "In fact, I was excited by her appointment because we both went London School of Economics and in fact, was proud to be a Ghanaian when London School of Economics featured her appointment in the quarterly Alumni Newsletter." Why didn't you question her appointment at that time instead of you rejoicing because you both went to the same London School of Economics. Attitudes like yours is what is destroying Ghana (and Africa) because people are given jobs not on the strength of their qualification but because they know someone or went to school with someone.

AMA, I am glad I have a defence Attorney in the person of Nyansasem to defend me free of charge today. I was not excited about a fellow Alumna's appointment because I could benefit from her. The fact is that, any time, I hear, see or read about the success of a Ghanaian or someone who went to the same schools and universities I attended, I become excited and proud. At the same time when I hear, see and read about their shortfall, I become sad or disappointed. It's natural. Again, in this case it was because I work in the field of equality and human rights and therefore take special interest in human rights issues in Ghana in particular and Africa in general. I have never met Ms Lauretta Vivian Lamptey and she left London School of Economics ages before I was a student there but was still proud of her appointment. There is nothing wrong with it.

Kakraba Cromwell, It would have been useful if you had given specific reason/s for the article lacking in depth substance.
I quoted the legal mandate of CHRAJ and related them to Lauretta Lamptey's actions and omissions and concluded that in my view she violated the mandate (act of corruption and misappropriation of public funds) and therefore unsuitable to be CHRAJ Commissioner. I also quoted the constitutional criteria for the appointment of CHRAJ Commissioner and concluded that by her CV ("not less than twelve years' standing as a lawyer”) and by her actions and omissions, she did not meet the criteria ("of high moral character and proven integrity") to have been appointed CHRAJ Commissioner. Are these not sufficient analysis to justify my conclusions?
My objectives for posting articles among others, is for readers to challenge my analysis, views and conclusions and for those who disagree with me to briefly put alternative analyses, views and conclusions. It does not help to just say that you are disappointed for lack of the depth of substance.
In the end you agreed that she should resign for bad publicity. Are you sure the only reason she should resign is the bad publicity and not her poor judgement, potential act of corruption and misappropriation of public funds, dishonesty, etc? Are you suggestion that even if she is innocent of all what she being accused of, for the mere reason of bad publicity she should resign? That is interesting because when I have gone beyond that to provide evidence based arguments on why she should not be CHRAJ Commissioner, you are disappointed.

Kofi, was happy and proud to read that a Ghanaian and alumni from his school had been chosen to lead such an institution when he read it from their newsletter.
However, after the scandal, he had taken his time to read more about her qualification and achievements and realized that she was not qualified to lead that institution. Is that too hard to understand?

She can't even arrange to employ drivers for her outfit. Just look at answers or excuses she been giving. I have always known that she is useless. What is going on in her brains, does she have any? Ghana at moment has so many of her type in most important positions and this the only reason we are going to the IMF.I have always known this, she is useless and I told people this so many years ago. Ask her if she's ever done even a single project independently. Her style is to depend on others to do her job since the 1970's.TRUST ME.

Interesting response. If Kofi was with her at London School of Economics then he should have been one of the people who should have questioned her qualification at the time of her appointment. Kofi has tried to project himself as an objective person I like reading his stuff but I am beginning to question his objectivity. When the president propose someone for a position those who know the person and understand what qualification is needed for the position must speak out early. Waiting for the person to commit terrible blunder before questioning his/her qualification is unpatriotic. We have too many of such appointments in Ghana but they are kept in office because they went to school with someone. We can do better than that.

Nii, at the time of my excitement over her appointment I was unaware of the qualification/criteria for the appointment of CHRAJ Commissioner. I also assumed that the appointing authority had carried out the necessary checks to have been satisfied that she met the requirement. With her actions and omissions being made public and accusation of incompetence, resulted in me researching into the criteria. That made me to conclude that the appointing authority failed to do due diligence before her appointment because she is not qualified to have been appointed CHRAJ Commissioner. As I stated in a previous article on this matter, she was appointed because she is NDC supporter, sympathiser or knew some powerful NDC member and not because she was qualified.
In any case, I was not the appointing authority to have questioned her suitability at the time of her appointment and would not have made any difference if I knew she was not suitable at the time of her appointment. Like all Ghanaians, I assumed wrongly that due diligence was done by the late Prof Mills and was therefore qualified for the position.

This is Monday quarterbacking. Kofi, if she had graduated from the University of Ouagadougou, instead of London School of Economics, would you have been excited about her appointment then and to be a proud Ghanaian? What you wrote just shows your vanity and nothing else. Presumably, you had her Cv years ago and why didn't you raise these concerns then given your human rights work experience. By the way, did you scream when she refused to resign from the board of GCB after her appointment as CHRAG Commissioner? It goes to show that you don't judge a book by its color. A lot of people have graduated from London School of Economics and have done dumb things. Lauretta is a prime example.

I have always admired Kofi Atta's articles on things Ghana, and though this particular one on Lauretta is less incisive, overall he is still on point. Lauretta in summary is a misfit for the post. for the purpose of CHRAJ, she comparatively is not the most appropriate legal mind to have been placed there, period. On the issue of probity, she clearly is a non-starter for the job! As for accountability and communication skills she is a minus.
A point though, clearly the late Prof. Mills in hindsight did this country a de-service with his selection of persons for high positions,--the likes of Okudzeto, Lauretta Lamptey, John Mahama etc, leaves a lot to be desired about his judgement. Prof. was a good person, but obviously one of bad judgement of peoples character. The results, Ghana is left to bear the burden of his poor judgement.
