It is sad most educated people in Ghana including all those who had rushed into politics with the exception of Dr Nii Moi Thompson, the economist and VERY FEW including the writer, Kina Lkimani have really given recognition to the fact that basic education ought to be given special attention, since it is the place where education really starts.
I always respect people who give attention to the basic education because it is the failure of our attention in this area of education that we are today foolishly struggling to accept the 3 years SHS education as enough. Keep in mind that spending longer time in class is not the issue but what happens between a teacher and pupils is the real deal.
When pupils are given the attention needed in the basic school they logically bound to have the required intelligence needed to climb the ladder to the SHS with the needed preparedness hence no need of spending longer time in their SHS levels anymore. This is the argument put forward by above mentioned economist who today heads the National Development Planning Committee.
With our educational experiences we do understand the realities that contribute to the intelligence of a student. In short all lies in the earlier preparedness of a child, where he/she studies and who teaches him/her there.
In Singapore, in the past, the nation led by Lee Kuan Yew depended on their university teachers for their nation's development. The best University teachers were posted to the basic shools to teach the pupils in order to achieve higher levels so that in the future these pupils can climb the ladder easily. Yes, so it had been till today in Singapore. This process had helped their education to bring the required development they needed.
Amazingly in one of my researches l discovered that even Americans were going there to find out how students gained their intelligence in Singapore. This move by the education ministry and the leadership in Singapore led them to where they are today, this therefore confirms the intelligence and the awareness of the writer Kina Likimani in her comments and advice that the basic education ought to be given the needed attention when education is mentioned in Ghana.
