Re: The Missing Link

The preeminent cause of the failure of pan-Africanism, the African personality theorem, and a united government in Africa resides in the very character and leadership style of Nkrumah himself: He came empty-handed from abroad under the largesse of friends who he eventually imprisoned or exiled; then he progressively abolished the franchise and imprisoned his opponents without trial, abridging the freedoms of speech and of association and imposing his will on parliament and on the justice system, finally emplacing his effigy on the national currency and his statues in the streets.

From where they were sitting and watching, the African leaders could see how their fate would play out if they were to cede their authority under the aegis of Nkrumah’s rule. To them, Nkrumah, who had also destabilized many African governments because of their disagreements with him, represented nothing of the African political or economic interest but his own overweening ambitions and libido for power.

The African leadership and personality theorems loftily propounded by Nkrumah collapsed by a scrutiny, by his fellow leaders, of the man in his own mirror.
