On completion the centre, would be named 'Cleveland A. Morgan Mother and child centr'
The construction of a new 70-bed Mother and Child Centre is to start this year at the Maamobi General Hospital to cater for the health care needs of the residents in and around the area.
On completion, the estimated 4.5 million-dollar Centre, would be named the “Cleveland A. Morgan Mother and Child Centre”, after the name of the grand-father of the benefactor, Nii Roy Gramps Morgan, a USA based Jamaican Reggae Musician and Instrumentalists and his fiancé, Anabel Manalo, a Scientist.
Roy Gramps Morgan is a leading member of the US based family reggae group Morgan Heritage, and was made an Ambassador of the 2017 Pan African Historical Festival, PANAFEST by Ghana.
The Maamobi General Hospital, built as Polyclinic in 1965, is situated within the Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region, but lack many infrastructures since it had not seen any major renovation over its 50 years of establishment.
The hospital authorities said though it was the biggest facility among the three government institutions in the Ayawaso Municipality and received referrals from the adjoining communities, the hospital continues to function in a limited structure making it difficult for the health professionals to deliver quality health care to its increasing clients.
Outdooring the hospital project at a ceremony in Accra, Ex- President Jerry John Rawlings, who was a special guest of honour, commended Gramps for coming over to support Ghana’s health sector with such a facility.
He said Ghana’s political climate offered such a conducive environment for all those in the diaspora to come in to invest and to make the country more welcoming.
He asked the citizenry to stop eroding the gains of the country through insanitary living but rather keep the environment clean to stop spreading diseases in the nation.
He also urged health professionals to be more dedicated to their work and help provide better services to the people.
Mr Gramps Morgan said he wanted to do “something special for Ghana” and so Ghanaians should “prepare themselves for the Cleveland Morgan Mother and Child Centre where women can have babies properly, healthy and sustainably”.
He said before the close of the year, the ground breaking ceremony would take place at the hospital premises for the building project to start.
Mr Abdul Fatah, known in showbiz as “Cash”, Chief Executive of Broadway Entertainment, said the hospital facility was being built under the partnership of the Broadway Entertainment and the Dadason Entertainment Health initiative programme, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, under a public-private partnership.
He said the facility was a social responsibility project that his organisation and Dadason Entertainment, headed by Gramps Morgan, was giving to Ghana.
He said they intended to build similar projects in six other regions of the country, assuring that Gramps, with his huge connection in the USA, the Caribbean, and Africa, was every ready to raise more funds to fund the projects.
Cash said ambassadors made up of some celebrities in Ghana, including Edem, Don Little, Samini, Original Ras Korby, Stonebbwoy, Friction, David Angelo and the Morgan Heritage Band, would help sensitise Ghanaians on the project and raise funds to support the work.
Dr Dorcas Anfu Okine, Medical Superintendent, Maamobi General Hospital, expressed the hope that when the project was completed, the health care workers and clients, especially, mothers and children would no longer compete for limited space.
“We will provide and receive health care in a comfortable and conducive setting,” she said.
“There have been promises in the past which never saw the light of day. I look forward to the day that I will enter the Maamobi General Hospital and see the beautiful Cleveland A. Morgan Mother and Child Centre standing magnificently”.
Chief Baaba Isah, Chairman of Zongo Chiefs in Mamobi, said when the facility was completed it would serve as a big booster to the health personnel and clients of the Hospital that had been “orphaned” for a long time.
