A pressure group by name We the People Matter Movement (WPMM) is demanding a law banning the payment of medical bills for government appointees abroad at the expense of the ordinary Ghanaian.

A statement signed by its convenor Dr. Sa-ad Iddrisu, and released in Accra said ‘We live in a country where government appointees and Members of Parliament (MPs) have the luxury to seek medical care abroad at the expense of tax payers, and majority of Ghanaians are left to the fate of poor health care delivery in the country.

The group is of the view that, whilst a government appointee is involved in a road accident, he or she is airlifted immediately with a military ambulance helicopter and the ordinary citizens are left to die at accident scenes due to lack of ambulances in the country to transport them to the nearest hospitals.

Below is the statement by the group headlined

CAN THE STATE PASS A LAW TO STOP GOVERNMENT APPOINTEES FROM SEEKING MEDICAL CARE ABROAD?

We live in a country where government appointees and Members of Parliament (MPs) have the luxury to seek medical care abroad at the expense of tax payers, and majority of Ghanaians are left to the fate of poor health care delivery in the country. Whilst a government appointee involved in a road accident can be airlifted immediately with a military ambulance helicopter, ordinary citizens are left to die at accident scenes due to lack of ambulances in the country to transport them to the nearest hospitals.

WE THE PEOPLE MATTER MOVEMENT are of the view that those entrusted to provide us with better health care systems should themselves be made to enjoy the same health care systems they provide in the country, be it bad or good. Politicians cannot provide Ghanaians with bad health care systems and then travel abroad to enjoy good health care systems in other countries. Sixty-two (62) years of injustice from political leadership is enough. We as citizens must advocate and ensure that laws are passed to stop this unfair system of governance.
