Market women and traders at Nana Bosoma Central market in Sunyani have expressed worry over growing unhygienic condition and appealed to city authorities to evacuate urgently heap of rubbish piled at the place.

According to them the garbage exposed food items being sold at the market to flies and rodents and expressed the fear that as the rains has set in the situation could worsen to cause an outbreak of contagious diseases like cholera.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Madam Fati Adams, a plantain seller lamented that people living around the market had taken advantage of the dirt, thereby using the area as a public refuse dump.

When the GNA visited the central market, heaps of solid waste and plastic materials had piled up whilst food vendors unconcernedly went on with their economic activities.

The GNA gathered that for some months now the city authorities had stopped lifting the refuse and as a result contributed to an unpleasant smell at the market.

Madam Yaa Pokuaa, another trader said the market women had informed the Municipal Assembly over the poor sanitary situation at the market but nothing had been done.

When contacted, Mr. Daniel Owusu Korkor, the Head of the Environmental Department of the Sunyani Municipal Assembly told the GNA that Zoomlion Company was responsible for waste management to keep the city clean.

He said his office would inform officials of the sanitation company and urged residents around the market area to stop dumping refuse haphazardly to prevent the outbreak of communicable diseases.

Efforts to contact officials of Zoom Lion were unsuccessful.
