Adongo and others must check my last submission. I literally lifted the info from the (USA's) CDC Website. I hope I haven't breached any copyright by sharing that info. But I know many of our folks do not have the luxury of accessing the Web long enough to search around. So, those of us who may be luckier to do so must share the information with others, too.
The info may sound too technical to some of us. But they can, at least, ask their Doctors to explain it to them. That info also indicates there are vaccines available to prevent the disease and even cure it. So, our Health Ministry could do more to quickly save lives.
Long Live Ghana!!!

Just going to count how many have been killed and advising that infected patients run to the Hospital is not an effective way to contain the disease and save lives.

About Pneumococcal:
The major types of pneumococcal disease are pneumonia (lung infection), bacteremia (blood infection), and MENINGITIS (infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord). Less severe illnesses include ear and sinus infections.
Pneumococcal pneumonia
Pneumococcal pneumonia is the most common form of pneumococcal disease in adults.[1]
It is estimated that about 900,000 Americans get pneumococcal pneumonia each year and about 5-7% die from it.[1, 2]
As many as 400,000 hospitalizations from pneumococcal pneumonia are estimated to occur annually in the United States.[2]
Invasive pneumococcal disease (bacteremia and meningitis)
In the United States, about 90% of invasive pneumococcal disease cases are in adults.[3]
There were an estimated 3,700 deaths in the United States from pneumococcal meningitis and bacteremia in 2013.[3]
Pneumococcal vaccines
Two different vaccines are used to prevent pneumococcal disease:
1). The pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) is given to children in the first two years of life, to all adults 65 years or older, and to younger adults with certain conditions that weaken their immune system.
2). The pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23) is given to adults 65 years or older, as well as children and younger adults with certain high-risk conditions.
Most (>95%) pneumococcal deaths in the United States are in adults.[3] Yet about 67 million adults at increased risk remain unvaccinated, leaving them vulnerable.[4]
Vaccination is the safest, most effective way to protect yourself.

, Mr. Berko, I am sorry but this information will do little in terms of educating the Ghanaian public. The article should explain the disease, cause, signs and symptoms of the disease in a lay man's view. Anyway, were the patients vaccinated or given antibiotics. Do we have enough of these vaccines in Ghana, since vaccination is the safest and most effective way to treat and protect one's self. I think you should come up with a more comprehensive article to educate the public thoroughly on the disease, risk factors and any preventive measures. Thanks, I will be back.
