The congestion at the maternity ward at the Kumasi South Hospital in Atonsu, a suburb of Kumasi, has resulted in some nursing mothers sleeping on benches, tables, and even on the floor, Dr Ofori Boadu, Medical Director of the hospital, has said.

According to him, the hospital receives several hundred patients daily, hence the need to either expand the hospital or complete the ongoing building project for the hospital.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday, 1 March, Dr Boadu said: “The congestion in the labour ward has resulted in patients sleeping on the floor and on tables.”

“We are, therefore, appealing to the authority to intervene so that the ongoing building project for the hospital, which began some 15 years ago, will be completed for us to move patients there.”

He added: “We are yet to inform this new government about our situation because there are ways and procedures for filing complaints in the health sector: we start from the regional level then to national before it finally gets to the Ministry of Health.”
