The situation at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) after the screening of a video documentary of the plight of pregnant women has been described as shocking and disheartening.

Pregnant women are compelled by the situation to sleep on the bare floor and take turns at the theatre to be delivered due to lack of labour beds.

The second largest teaching hospital serving four regions; Ashanti, Eastern, Brong Ahafo and Western Regions can only boast of four beds at labour theatre.

This according to authorities is increasing maternal deaths despite doctors and nurses attempts to curb the situation.

Construction works on a 995-bed facility has stalled for over forty years due to lack of funds despite promises by successive governments to fully complete it.

Following Joy Fm’s exposé titled ”Next to Die” which was aired to residents of the Garden City, it was a sorrowful sight to behold as they watch pregnant women and their children go through hell .

Put together by investigative reporter Seth Kwame Boateng of the Multimedia Group of Companies (MGCs), a private media house, the heartbreaking documentary premiered Monday night at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital ( KATH) auditorium, revealed majority of pregnant women losing their lives during labour.

Footages in the documentary also revealed that doctors at the facility pick and choose who to attend to in labour since only four persons can receive care at a time.

Some women in the metropolis after watching the disheartening documentary spoke to mynewsgh.com’s reporter in the Ashanti Region and called government to complete the stalled projects which authorities of KATH saying it will minimize maternal deaths when completed.
