Seven supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been reportedly injured when some armed men suspected to be members of the ruling NDC attacked them during a rally at Tinangeria in the Wulensi constituency of the Northern region.

It is unclear what triggered the Thursday evening violence but last week supporters of the two parties clashed at Napkayili over a parcel of land.

An eye witness Umar Abubakari told Ultimate News Tinangeria is closer to a village of the NDC parliamentary candidate and the incumbent member of Parliament.

According to him, the attackers wielded cutlasses, other sharp objects, stones and assaulted members of the unarmed rival party who were mostly fleeing the scene.

“The village is closer to the hometown of the NDC parliamentary candidate so while the NPP were having the rally, all of a sudden they (NDC) organized themselves and come and attacked them,” he said.

Earlier reports suggested two sustained head injuries and were being treated at the Wulensi clinic but a staff at the facility told Ultimate News seven persons were admitted, three in critical condition.

The source says the three have been transferred to the Bimbila hospital and the others treated and discharged.

Pictures from the clinic available to Ultimate News saw a young men with a deep cut at his back with a male nurse attending to him; another with a broad bleeding wound at a little over his left eye and others with leg and hand injuries.

District Police commander did not answer to calls requesting for comment but a source close to one of the feuding parties says the police have called an emergency meeting with the two parties.

The crowd were dispersed by the police after the attackers had left the scene and calm has reportedly been restored.

No arrest has been made yet.

There is an is an upsurge in political violence in the constituency with few days away from polls.

This is the third time some supporters of the parties have clashed just within two weeks.
