Africa Parliamentary Capacity Officer on Natural Resource Governance, Adams Fusheini has bemoaned the fruitless attempts by successive governments to combat the age-old canker; corruption.
According to Mr. Fusheini, politicians through corrupt means have depleted the abundant natural resources, which often have the huge potential of leading Ghana’s developments.
He said the resource curse, which is the failure of many resource-rich countries to benefit fully from their natural resource wealth, and for governments in these countries to respond effectively to public welfare needs, has equally bedevilled Ghana through politics.
Although former President Jerry John Rawlings killed some corrupt officers as deterrent, Mr Fusheini noted that the bane persists, especially among the political class.
He called for a complete separation of political influence from the management of institutions, especially those institutions responsible for the resource management.
Mr, Fusheini was speaking at breakfast meeting organised by Institute of Green Growth Solution at Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The meeting organised on the theme “Ghana Beyond Aid, the role of Natural Resources” was attended by resident country representative of Konrad Adenauer Stifung, Mr. Burkhart Hellemann, Director of Mines at the Natural resource ministry Mr. Christopher Anokye, Dr. Elias Takor Ayuk of United Nations University, FAO senior land and water officer Mr. Eugene Rurangwa among others.
