Sunyani (B/A), Oct. 30, GNA- Nana Obiri Boahen, Brong-Ahafo Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the weekend advised student unions against being used by politicians to engage in violent acts during the electioneering campaigns towards the 2008 general election.

Addressing the central committee meeting of Brong-Ahafo Students Union (BASU) in Sunyani, Nana Boahen urged the union not to dabble in chieftaincy issues. He noted with concern how some student bodies were engaged to incite other entities to generate unnecessary tensions in the communities, instead of concentrating on their education.

Nana Boahen called on the union to identify prominent citizens of the region who could support its activities towards its advancement. Mr. Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, Brong-Ahafo Regional Minister, urged the union to question the source of wealth of personalities they would like to invite to grace their programmes.

"Student unions always like inviting rich people to their programmes in a bid to get enough money, without questioning how such people got their wealth", the Regional Minister noted. Mr Baffour-Awuah advised the union to develop a more comprehensive data of members and activities to ensure its growth. Mr. Anane Agyei, National President of BASU, appealed to all citizens of the region to assist the union to obtain an office accommodation to function effectively.

He said the meeting was aimed at developing a five-year strategic plan towards the union's growth.
