Don’t become a burden on your children at retirement - Vice-Chancellor to workers

The Vice-Chancellor of University of Cape Coast (UCC), Prof Joseph Ghartey Ampiah has tasked workers to plan and save towards their retirement to be able to enjoy a comfortable life and minimize the burden on their children and family members.

He particularly tasked the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU), the Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG) and other unions to as matter of urgency also invest in their members and tell them to plan towards retirement.

Prof Ghartey Ampiah in a speech read on his behalf at the 2019 send off and long service awards ceremony organized by the Directorate of Human Resources Welfare Section of UCC, saluted the retirees for working so long in the University.

The University honoured 87 members of the retired staff including teaching and non-teaching staff comprising 24 senior members, 34 senior staff and 29 junior staff.

Out of the number, 83 have served the University between 10 and 42 years in various capacities.

The retirees’ awards ranged from orthopedic mattress, living room furniture plus executive glass centre table, air conditioner, generator, double-cabin refrigerator, deep freezer, some cash and citations.

Prof Ghartey Ampiah acknowledged the longest serving staff, Mr. Moses Prah who served for 42 years and urged all the retirees to be health conscious at this period of their lives and to spend quality time with their families.

According to him, his institution under the auspices of the welfare section of the Directorate of Human Resources will continue to appreciate and show commitment to the wellbeing of retired staff by strengthen and providing the required resources to the welfare section to enable the section to reach out to all the retirees outreach programme.

On behalf of the retirees, Mr. Prosper Kow Nyantuame thanked the University for the opportunity granted them to serve in various capacities by way of employment.
