The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed disappointment in the electoral commission chairperson over her decision to recount problems she met at the commission to President Akufo-Addo.
The NDC says the attempt by Mrs. Jean Mensah to demonise her predecessor, who organised a successful election in 2016, is unfair.
Speaking to Starr Midday News Friday, Peter Boamah Otukunor, Deputy general Secretary of the NDC said “yesterday we got rather more disappointed when we heard the EC chairperson giving credence when she attempted to please the president, to tell the president that she was worth the appointment and she was working to the wheels and interest of the president.”.
He added: “We thought it was very disappointing because as an electoral commissioner, you don’t need to be pleasing the president, you don’t need to be telling the president and demonizing your predecessors to show that you are doing well and you are helping achieve the president’s interest. That exposes Jean Mensah very badly”.
The EC chair in a meeting with the President Thursday noted: “It is an institution that has not been founded on rules, is not founded on administrative policies, does not have a governance framework. We came into office and found out that we do not have a single policy to guide procurement, to guide finance, to guide human resource, nothing exists.
“In a nutshell, the Commission has existed as an election machine, and over the year we have spent a lot of efforts to plug the loopholes to the best of our ability. It has been run as a free for all institution.”
