The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Kumbungu in the Northern Region, Abdul Salam Fataw Hamza, has implored the chiefs and people of the district to support the fight against open defecation in the area.

He believes a lot more importance must be attached to the fight against bad sanitation practices in that part of the country.

According to him, the district performs abysmally in the fight against open defecation in spite of efforts by the district assembly to combat the menace.

He stressed the need for the Assembly and government to enforce sanitation by-laws and prosecute culprits.

The Kumbungu DCE made these remarks during a town hall meeting at the district capital.

Mr Salam informed the people that government has launched a national sanitation campaign to end open defecation and indiscriminate littering of the environment.

He further announced that some communities in the district will receive public toilets.

“Here I will call for the support of our traditional authorities, religious and opinion leaders in our communities to join forces with the Assembly to ensure the practice of open defecation is history. Mr. Chairman, to help address some of these challenges, I am happy to announce that four communities in the district will soon receive community toilets,” added.

The beneficiary communities are: Zugu, Zangbalun, Vogu and Kumbungu.
