The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Techiman North, Peter Mensah has cautioned negative critics of the Free SHS policy to desist from it and rather embrace it as it has brought financial relief to most Ghanaian parents.
According to him, the government has made provisions to ensure enough infrastructure is provided for Schools to do away with the Double track system.
The DCE was addressing Staff and Students of the Akumfi Ameyaw Senior High Technical School (AASTECH) in Aworowa near Techiman as part of his five-day tour of second cycle institutions within the Techiman North District.
The five-day tour of the DCE is aimed at familiarising with beneficiaries of the free SHS program and also inspire them to study hard ahead of their upcoming May-June WASCE.
As part of the tour, the DCE will also interact with staff of the institutions and receive first-hand information on ongoing projects there.
At AASTECH where the tour commenced, Mr. Peter Mensah inspected a well-furnished 600 bang bed ultra-modern girls’ dormitory, a newly constructed dining hall with a kitchen and a twelve unit one-story classroom block equipped with modern furniture.
The projects are part of the government’s emergency infrastructure for Senior High Schools aimed at tackling overcrowding among students.
Addressing the students, the DCE reiterated the significance of the free SHS program and touted the government’s desire to improve it.
He said the government has invested hugely in the initiative and charged the students to study hard to justify the investment.
Mr. Peter Mensah said the initiative has brought financial relief to most Ghanaians, especially parents and guardians. Additionally, he revealed that provisions are afoot to tackle graduate unemployment in the country.
The Headmaster of the school, Solomon Nyamaa Douglas lauded the current government over its efforts in giving the school a major facelift.
He disclosed that, thanks to the free SHS, enrolment of girl child in the School has risen describing it as a necessary step to address gender inequality in education.
Among others, he also mentioned water crisis as well as insufficient boys’ dormitory as challenges hindering the progress of the school and appealed for more support
