A huge durbar was held by chiefs and people of Gbambaya in Tamale to mark the commissioning of a furnished CHPs facility fully funded by their Member of Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu.

A legion of residents of other beneficiary communities also left their homes overjoyed and raced to the ceremony ground near the Business Senior High School to witness the handing over of the facility to the community and health authorities.

Many others grabbed the opportunity to catch a glimpse of a man whose name and works they know very well but have not seen in close distance.

Mothers trekked from far communities like Nyarizhagu and Dungu- Kukuo to attend the ceremony.

The Assemblyman of Nyohini South Electoral Area, Adnan Adam in his introductory statement said, in most communities under the Tamale south constituency, Haruna Iddrisu is viewed as “the president”, because every available amenity found in those communities was provided by the Member of Parliament.

He underscored a long list of benefits of the facility and thanked the MP for yet another fulfilled promise.

The Regent of choggu was overwhelmed with joy and expressed his appreciation. He, however, pleaded with the MP to construct a school building for the community.

The chief of Paraq also shared his delight but appealed to government to also speed up measures to construct the only access road to the community. He lamented over the impacts of the bad road on residents, especially market women.

Gbambaya is one of the many underdeveloped suburbs of the Northern Regional city, largely occupied by peasant farmers and petty traders.

Apart from perennial flooding, access roads are in deplorable state and acute water shortage are the imposing challenges for residents and nearby environs.

Speaking at the ceremony, Haruna Iddrisu also the Minority Leader in Parliament, said the facility was constructed from his share of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) at the cost of about GH228,000.

According to him, the SG-SS bank under it “cooperate social responsibility” assisted with furnishing of the facility.

“I’m here to formally hand over to the chiefs and people of Gbambaya”, the Minority leader declared. “I’m also particularly happy that this facility will serve the Business Secondary School”.

Speaking on a drama displayed earlier by students of Business Senior High School about why pregnant women need regular checkups during pregnancy, Haruna Iddrisu advised the women against the over-reliance on traditional medicine during the period.

He said the facility may serve as a referral point and therefore advocated the Tamale metro health authorities to allocate a medical doctor to the facility to effectively respond to the health needs of the locals.
