I didn’t beg for treason charges against me to be dropped - Koku Anyidoho

A member of Koku Anyidoho’s legal team has said his client did not beg the state to drop treason charges leveled against him.

“Koko Anyodoho no, no, no, not at all. He never went to beg anybody”. A member of Mr. Anyidoho’s legal team Dafeamekpor, K. E. Rockson-Nelson said in an interview with GBCs radio programme Behind the News.

According to the lawyer, Mr. Anyidoho exercised circumspection and allowed the state to do its own investigations and at the end of the day, charges against his client were dropped adding that his client had no influence on the decision by the state.

On the show monitored by MyNewsGh.com’s Syxtus Eshun in Kumasi, Mr. Dafeamekpor noted that Koku Anyidoho’s release will not in any way encourage the public to be irresponsible in their public utterances.

On Monday, August 20, 2018, the Ghana Police Service (GPS) dropped all charges against the Mr. Koku Anyidoho who is the Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

According to reports, the treasonable charges against Mr. Anyidaho were dropped after the Attorney General and Minister of Justice said they were no more interested in the case.

Mr. Koku Anyidoho was picked up by the Ghana Police Service at the Accra International Conference Center during a conference held by his party NDC.

The conference was to react to the controversial Ghana-US Military Cooperation agreement.

What did Koku Anyidoho say?

Mr. Anyidoho in a statement suggested the President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will be overthrown just like his father in a civil revolt.

He said, “On January 13, 1972, a certain Col. Ignatius Kutu Acheampong led a movement that removed the Progress Party from power. Busia was the Prime Minister and Akufo-Addo’s father was a ceremonial president. Somebody should tell Nana Akufo-Addo that history has a very interesting way of repeating itself. There will be a civil revolt”, he said.

“There will be a civilian coup détat. There will be a social revolution. We [NDC] are starting it on Wednesday. The movement is starting on Wednesday. Nana Addo will have sleepless nights. He will suffer from diarrhea. He said he wanted to be president but we will make sure he will be fed up on the seat, he further said.

However, Mr. Anydohos comment has since been condemned by civil society groups, lawyers and most politicians in the country. His party, the NDC dissociated itself from such comment.

Who was the father of President Akufo Addo?

Edward Akufo Addo, the father of current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo was the President (Head of State) of Ghana in the Second Republic from 31 August 1970 to 13 January 1972. He was overthrown in a coup d’état in 1972. Gen I. K. Acheampong succeeded him. Edward Akufo Addo was also a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and was one of the Big Six. Akufo Addo’s father as a Supreme Court judge also sat on a treason trial involving Tawia Adamafio, Ako Adjei and three others after a bomb attack on President Kwame Nkrumah.

The case was dismissed with fellow judges for finding some of the accused not guilty.
