In November of last year, several media houses claimed Obour had criticised Ebony Reigns’ style of dressing. The statement from the president of the Musicians Union of Ghana at the time read as follows.

It’s very bad. Again…as a union, as much as we will try to make the public understand the role that our musicians play, that they are in an acting role…they should be cautious of the moral values of the country that they are operating in.

“Lady Gaga could wear it and nobody will cry, will scream foul about it because maybe the environment and the moral values of the country they are in is different from the moral values of the country we are in now. And so we are always advising our musicians to be quite decorous in their way of dressing,” the Konkontibaa hitmaker is reported to have said. But Obour speaking on Starr Chat Wednesday said he was misrepresented by the media.

According to him, he was only advising the ‘Maame Hwe’ singer to be mindful of the environment she lives in.

“I didn’t criticise Ebony. It was misrepresented, I said people should see her dressing and compare her to an actress who’s playing her role,” Obour told Bola Ray on Starr Chat Wednesday.

This prompted a reply from Ebony which read as, Ebony Reigns dressing is very bad and is not our culture, but ‘chopping’ of musicians money is very good and I think that is our culture. some gh musicians are dying of hunger and what is ur union doing about that mr president?do you really care?#hustle.”

From what the president of MUSIGA said on the Starr Show hosted by Bola Ray, he is trying to remind the public of how impactful public figures such as musicians are on the society at large. Even more so they are role models to the young. The issue though is that in our setting in Ghana it is highly unlikely that certain things will easily be accepted. Ebony Reigns sense of fashion will be fully and truly accepted by the Ghanaian public.

Fact is our society is a highly judgemental one with little leeway for different styles and mindsets. The comments made by Obour which he attempted to clarify on the Starr Show have not been dealt with unequivocally but then well it seems that’s all we will get from him for now.
