Kokrokoo Charities Foundation donates incubators to Kwahu-Atibie Government Hospital

To help promote the health of newly-born babies in the country, the Kokrokoo Charities Foundation has presented two infant incubators valued at 20,000 dollars to the Kwahu-Atibie Government Hospital.

The support is to help reduce infant deaths in the country which, according to UNICEF, is pegged it at about 140,000 preterm births annually, out of which 8,000 of them die before 30 days.

So far, the two incubators financed by Mr Mike Twum-Barmah, Chief Executive Officer of Midwest Company Limited, adds up to a total of 22 incubators that had been donated and installed by the Foundation under its Project 100 incubators programme.

Mr Kwami Sefa Kayi, Founder of Kokrokoo Charities Foundation and host of the Kokrokoo Morning Show on Peace FM, an Accra-based radio station, handed over the incubators to Dr Arko Akoto-Ampaw, Medical Superintendent of the hospital at Kwahu-Atibie at the weekend.

He explained that the Project 100, was designed to help champion the targeted strategy for accelerating a reduction of new-born deaths in Ghana and expressed the hope that the incubators would help improve the care for neo-natals at the hospital.

Dr Akoto-Ampaw thanked the foundation and said hospital had only one incubator and that the additional two would greatly save lives of infants.

He explained that incubators would enhance the hospital’s flagship project called project club 36, a pregnancy school that educates women on the delivery process.

Dr Akoto-Ampaw noted that the hospital, which was built over 60 years old, had not seen any major changes and lacked equipment.

Mr Dennis Adutwum, Programmes Director of Kokrokoo Foundation said in the coming days, the Foundation would present other set incubators to hospitals in the Upper East, Upper West and Northern Region.

He said the Foundation raises funds through individual support and that of corporate organisations, which it uses to purchase the incubators.

Hospitals that had benefitted from the Project 100 Incubators programme are the Police Hospital and the La General Hospital in Accra, the Prestea Government Hospital in the Western Region, the Nsawam Government Hospital in the Eastern Region, the Cape Coast Regional Hospital, Tamale Regional Hospital, among others.

The distribution of the incubators was based on a survey carried out by the Ministry of Health, assessing the needs of the various hospitals in the country.
