Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice has appealed to the chiefs and people of the Nandom Traditional Area to unite in order to develop the newly created Nandom District.
Dr. Kumbuor made the appeal when he inaugurated the newly created Nandom District on behalf of President John Evans Atta Mills at Nandom in the Upper West Region.
The Attorney General and Minister of Justice said the creation of the new districts was not only a fulfillment of the promise made by President Mills to the people of Ghana, but also a step towards achieving the full decentralisation process.
According to Dr. Kumbuor, the government of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) would continue to remain focus in bringing good governance to the door steps of the people.
He appealed to the chiefs to endeavour to release land without any reservations to put up the district infrastructure.
Dr. Kumbuor, who is also the NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Nandom Constituency appealed to the people to renew President Mills' tenure of office in the coming general elections for him to continue his equitable distribution of national resources.
Mr. Ambrose Dery, the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Lawra-Nandom Constituency commended President Mills and his government for creating the district which according to him would facilitate the speedy development of the area.
The Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament was however quick to add that the creation of the district came as a result of multi-party democracy and should not be touted as a solo achievement of one person or government.
Mr. Dery also refuted rumours that his law firm went to court against the creation of the Nandom District, describing it as a cheap propaganda tactics being employed by his opponents to discredit his chances of winning the seat.
The Lawra-Nandom MP called on all to eschew partisanship and let them work together to develop the district.
Mr. Sampson Abu, the Lawra District Chief Executive (DCE), said with the kind of development projects that the Nandom Traditional Area had already benefited from the government and the Assembly, the district was already ready to function on its own.
He said government had now given them the district they had yearned for over 20 years now, adding that the onus now rested on them to support the government by mobilizing resources both human and material to ensure its effective development.
Naa Dr. Charles Puoure Puobe Chiirr, the Paramount Chief of the Nandom Traditional Area thanked the President for listening to their long time cry and assured that they would release parcels of land for the putting up of district infrastructure.
He appealed for continued support from government to ensure that the district grew fully to help alleviate poverty in the area.**
