The Office of the MP for East Ayawaso condemns derogatory statements against residents of Nima by Hon. Samuel Atta-Akyea

My office and executive members of the East Ayawaso Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) takes serious exception to the unfortunate and insulting statement made by the Minister of Works and Housing, Hon. Samuel Atta-Kyea indicating that the good people of my constituency (Nima) have no flush toilets.

The minister during a debate on president Akufo-Addo state of the Nation Address on the floor of parliament yesterday, 27th February 2019 said

“Mr Speaker, there‘s a slum upgrading which is about happening, that‘s the Nima area. We wouldn’t want to pay lip service to the fact that we have some Ghanaians who are living in slums.

"We are going, to begin with, Nima and give Nima a facelift and for the first time we will see the good People of Nima flushing toilets like anybody will do in East Legon.”

The above comments by the minister is not only unfortunate, insulting but gross disrespect and lack of regard for the president, H.E Nana Akufo-Addo under whose leadership he is minister, the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia who are proud residents of Nima including the Jubilee House, the seat of government which is under my jurisdiction.

I wish to also remind the minister, Hon. Atta-Kyea Nima is not a jangle and that the community has no track record of open dedication. The good people of area Ayawaso East and households in Nima for that matter are already using the facility the minister is talking about.

However, even though the community is faced with some challenges, the issue open deification cannot be party of our problems and we even have a number flushing public toilet facilities in this vicinity.

The minister must therefore note that Nima is one of the early civilized communities in Ghana even where they flush their toilets.

Meanwhile, the constituency or the community houses a lot of cooperate institutions such as banks, hotels, media houses and other private institutions which have flush toilet in their respective office premises.

I am therefore on behalf of the NDC and the good people of Ayawaso East calling on the Honorable Minister to humbly apologize for such unfounded derogatory comments and not to repeat any of such utterances.

I wish to also call on the president, the vice, Religious Leaders, the leadership of the NPP at the national, regional and constituency levels, Chiefs and Opinion Leaders to also condemn the unsavory statements by the minister who doubles as the MP for Akim Abuakwa South constituency in the Eastern Region.

Long Live Ayawaso East (Nima)!!!

Long Live Ghana!!!

HON. Naseer Mahama Toure

Member of Parliament

Ayawaso East Constituency
