More Ghanaians died from accidents in nine months of 2019 than in 2018 – Police

Statistics from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department of the Ghana Police Service has revealed that more lives were claimed through road accidents for the first nine months of the year than the entire 2018.

Director in charge of education Research & Training at the MTTD Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng who revealed this said figures as at September this year shows 2,569 deaths have occurred through road accidents as against the 2018 statistics of 2,341deaths.

The 2019 figure does not include the last quarter of the year.

Supt. Alexander Kwaku Obeng also revealed that by September 2019 11,645 injuries were recorded as against the 13,677 injuries recorded for the entire 2018.

He disclosed this after receiving a donation on behalf of the IGP Oppong Buanuh from a non-governmental organization Street Sense.

Speaking to the media after the presentation a Trustee and National Coordinator Street Sense Samson Oddoye described his outfit as an NGO that has demonstrated a commitment to promoting safety and sanity on Ghana’s roads since its establishment in September 2011.

He said the NGO aims be an effective partner on road safety issues in Ghana as yuletide approaches and would support moves to educate, and increases awareness in order to empower people to bring sanity on the roads.

Mr Samson Oddoye said the decision to donate to the MTTD falls in line with the vision of Street Sense because the Ghana Police Service as the enforcer of Road traffic regulations needs all the support it can get to be properly equipped to do its work.

He appealed to the government to adequately resource the MTTD by providing equipments, and training in order to enable them effectively play their role of enforcing motor traffic laws.

Street Sense presented 100 pieces of No helmet No Ride stickers, 100 pieces of Don’t Drink Alcoholic and Drive stickers, 100 pieces of Speed Kills Stickers, 100 pieces of Don’t jump Red light stickers, 100 pieces of No phone calls /Texting stickers, 100 pieces of Street sense T-shirt 100 pieces of reflection jacket and among others.
