Stephen Atubiga’s decision to contest in the flag bearer race of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is a joke, Yaw Boateng Gyan, former National Organiser of the NDC, has said.

According to him, his decision brings “comic relief to Ghanaians.”

So far, apart from Mr Atubiga, about four other leading members of the NDC have launched their bid to contest in the race.

They are former Majority Leader of Parliament, Alban Bagbin; former Rector of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Prof Joshua Alabi; Ekow Spio-Garbrah, former Minister of Trade and Industry; and Mr Sylvester Mensah, former Chief Executive Officer of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).

Mr Mahama is yet to declare whether he will contest or not. Addressing members of the NDC in Kumasi on Saturday, 28 April 2018, during the party’s Unity Walk, Mr Mahama said God will choose a leader for the party.

“God himself will choose someone to lead us. And I know that when that person is selected, by the grace of God, we will be victorious in the 2020 election,” he said.

Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM on Friday, 4 May, Mr Boateng Gyan said: “Atubiga’s declaration brings comic relief.

“The other names that have come up are serious people but please let us drop the name of Atubiga. His name brings comic relief.”
