These are the provisional results coming from the ongoing ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) congress at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana, Legon. To win "one touch", i.e in the first round an aspirant must obtain at least 1154 votes.

  • 9:01: President Kufuor arrives

  • 8:45 Results announced

  • 7:00 am: The Director of Elections at the Electoral Commission, Mr. Albert Kofi Arhin invits agents of the 17 aspirants up onto the podium and announced that the contents of the ballot boxes were to be poured out one after the other, sorted for their validity, followed by separating them into the individual aspirants.

  • At 5am on Sunday, voting came to an end after the last batch of voters, NPP Patrons, cast their ballots

  • Ashanti region delegates next to vote

  • Media being manhandled by police

  • All TV cameramen thrown out of congress ... some have their cameras taken away

  • - Paul Afoko returns to the hall amidst jeers and catcall and casts his vote

17 contesting to pick NPP presidential ticket

Accra, Dec. 22, GNA - The 17 contesting to pick the presidential ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for Election 2008 are addressing the delegates at the Special National Delegates Congress on Saturday. In all about 2,326 delegates from the 230 constituencies, patrons of the party and overseas branches with voting right would be voting to elect a flag bearer to lead the party for Election 2008.

The aspirants, who had toured the whole country canvassing for votes are; Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo; Mr Kwabena Agyepong; Professor Mike Oquaye; Mr Hackman Owusu-Agyeman; Dr Barfuor Adjei-Barwuah; Mr Jake Otanka Obetsebi-Lamptey and Mr Daniel Kweku Botwe. Mr Alan John Kyerematen; Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku; Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; Papa Owusu Ankomah; Mr Boakye Kyeremanteng Agyarko; Dr Kobina Arthur Kennedy; Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng; Vice President Alhaji Aliu Mahama; Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor and Mr Felix Kwesi Owusu-Adjapong.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC); Convention People's Party (CPP); Democratic Freedom Party (DFP); Greater Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) and People's National Convention (PNC) have sent their representatives.

Also in attendance are Ministers of State; Members of Parliament; Members of the Diplomatic Corps and foreign branches of the party. The NPP congress on the theme; "Unity for Victory," would also be addressed by President Kufuor.
