The Youth Wing of the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) in the Asante-Akim North Constituency of the Ashanti Region has vowed to resist any attempt to ensure the incumbent runs unopposed in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries.

According to the youth, they have intelligence that the constituency executives are planning to petition the Regional Executives to impose Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi as the sole candidate for the election.

The NPP goes to the polls in April to elect Parliamentary candidates for the 2020 Parliamentary election in areas where the party has incumbent Members of Parliament.

But the NPP Asante-Akim Youth Wing says foisting a candidate who’s not the choice of the people on them will spell political doom for the party in the December 7 election.

The former President of the Youth Wing, Felix Owusu Anane in an interview with Kasapa FM’s Akwasi Nsiah cautioned the constituency executives not to side-step the process for the selection of a Parliamentary candidate urging them open nominations for all interested and qualified persons to contest.

“We have reported that the MP on Sunday met with constituency executives and all 22 electoral area coordinators within Asante-Akim North to put together a petition and forward to the Regional and National executives to say that they want Hon. Andy Appiah Kubi to go unopposed. But we won’t countenance this move because it is alien to the NPP because we as a party do our things in transparency and in fairness. If the party leadership doesn’t put their feet on the ground and stop this move the NPP will laugh at the wrong side of the mouths come 2020 elections.

“We will not allow some people's parochial interest to ruin the party and send the NPP to the opposition just four years after being in power. It is public knowledge that the Ashanti Region is the stronghold of the NPP, so whatever the majority of people are not in support of should not be done because of monetary gains. If nominations are opened and only one person picks the form then we all know that we’ll be doing popular acclamation when the time is due.”
