The main opposition party, National Democratic Congress has chastised the government for always finding ways to divert the attention of Ghanaians anytime there is a looming crisis.General Secretary of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia at a press conference held at the party’s headquarters on Monday accused government of trying to divert attention from the SHS placement crisis with the release of the Asantehene’s speech at the UN.
Thousands of parents have been trooping to the various solution centres set up by the Ghana Education Service in the various regions to have the placements of their wards reviewed since last week.
In the midst of this, however, a video of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has surfaced online.
The video shows the Asantehene revealing during a speech delivered at the UN General Assembly that Manhyia Palace intervened to “coax” John Mahama into conceding defeat during the 2016 general elections.
But shortly after the video made airwaves, former Chief of Staff under the Mahama administration, Julius Debrah denied the claims.
Speaking to the media, Asiedu Nketia said the appearance of the video is part of the government’s attempt to shift the focus of Ghanaians from the hullabaloo surrounding the SHS placement.
According to him, “there is a crisis of admission into senior high schools as we speak. Some students are reported to have committed suicide and there is chaos almost in all the campuses of the leading secondary schools. What NPP is doing is that they want us to be talking about whether Otumfuo gave advise to Mahama in 2016 or not whilst these things are swept under the carpet”.
He added that former President John Dramani Mahama dealt with crisis better when he was in office than President Akufo-Addo.
“If NPP wants us to compare records as to who demonstrated better leadership in crisis then the verdict is clear, it’s President Mahama. If NPP wants us to compare who is a better democrat, the verdict is almost clear and that is President Mahama.”
