President Akufo-Addo has named Nalerigu as the capital town of the North East Region.

The president announced the selection at a ceremony held at the presidency to present the Constitutional Instrument backing the creation of the region on Tuesday.

This is the first of six to be named. Per a statement from the presidency, the 5 others, will accordingly be named subsequently till Friday February 15.

The presentation follows the December 27, 2018 referendum where residents within the catchment areas of the six proposed new regions voted to give an overwhelming endorsement for the creation of the regions.

Nalerigu is the largest town in the East Mamprusi Municipal Assembly.

Prior to Tuesday's announcement, leaders of various communities such as Walewale, Nalerigu and Gambaga all in the newly created region had made several calls for their respective communities to be selected as the capital.

The president has tasked Minister for the Northern region, Salifu Saeed to act as caretaker Minister for the new region until a substantive minister is appointed.

“Nalerigu has been chosen as the capital of the North East region,” President Akufo-Addo announced to an elated reaction from the gathering.

He further expressed optimism about the development of the region with the cooperation of all inhabitants.

“Government’s projects and structures will be equally equitably spread across the region. Let us work hard together and I’m confident that with dedication and commitment the North east region will develop and touch the lives of every resident and help us to build the great nation of Ghana we all desire”.

The president also presented the Constitution Instrument ‘CI-116’ which certifies the creation of the North East region to the leader of the delegation, Nayiri Nabohagu Mahami Sheriga.
