An IT consultant at the Electoral Commission, Dr. Yaw Ofori-Agyei has established that individuals and organizations who wish to provide samples of a new biometric device for the EC should at least make sure it has been tested in 3 other African countries.
According to him, because the Electoral Commission wants to make the system better, all proposed devices will be sternly sampled.
“We were clear in the specifications that should be used at several other places. We stated that every device someone will like to recommend to the Electoral Commission must be used in at least three other African countries. It should be tried and tested.”
Dr. Ofori-Agyei throwing more light on the issue stated in an interview with Peace FM’s morning show, “Kokrooko” that instead of maintaining the manual verification system which has been used for the high number of voters unable to authenticate their fingerprints, a completely new device is required.
He identified, the new biometric recognition system if acquired, will enable a newer approach and a much efficient work during the elections.
The Electoral Commission, despite several criticisms, has decided to change the biometric voter registration process for the 2020 elections, adding facial recognition for voter verification to deal with a large number of people unable to be verified with the fingerprint.
