The Flagbearer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) ex-President John Mahama has described the Ofosu Ampofo leaked tape controversy as a distraction by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to sway the NDC from galvanizing for the upcoming 2020 elections.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo on the said tape is allegedly heard telling party communicators that the NDC ahead of the 2020 elections is strategizing to launch attacks on some prominent personalities in the society including the National Peace Council Chair, Reverend Emmanuel Asante, the EC Chairperson Mrs Jean Mensah.

“For the first time, I will endorse insulting the National Peace Council Chair,” to cheers from the NDC Communicators.

He further stated that the Electoral Commissioner, Jean Mensah’s comments over the Ayawaso by-election incident was unpalatable to them, and hence they will “take her to the cleaners.”

He also told his people to launch similar attacks on President Akufo-Addo who is the Commander In Chief of the Armed Forces, urging them to do all in their power to paint him violent in the face of the international community, thereby discrediting his credibility.

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has invited Mr Ampofo to assist investigations into the content of the tape.

But speaking on the matter for the first time, Ex-President Mahama while addressing a crowd of NDC members after his victory match, urged NDC members to stop arguing with the NPP and rather focus their message on what the party can do for Ghanaians when voted into power.

“Our opponents are good at propaganda this issue of a tape is just a distraction, dismiss it with the contempt that it deserves. Let us focus, our message must be to the Ghanaian people. Let us tell the Ghanaian people what we can do for them and seize the endless arguments with the NPP. It is only a government that has too much time on its hands because it is not working that will have time to go and bug the offices of its opponents. We don’t have time for that, let us focus our message and tell Ghanaians what we can do for them. We already have a track record, we’ve governed this country before.”
