Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs
Parliament of Ghana has denied assertions that successive governments always have their way through in terms of budget and other loan approvals.
According to the highest law-making arm of government, it has the power to resist the passage of any budget, bill or loans presented to them for approval if it's not in the interest of the country's development.
The Majority Leader and Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu revealed this to Owoahene Kwabena Acheampong in an exclusive interview on Bryt FM in Koforidua on Sunday, November 18 2018.
The Suame Member of Parliament made reference to an incident that occurred in 1980 during President Hilla Liman's time when Parliament refused to approve a budget presented to them although it had the majority of MPs.
"Its never true Parliament always approve budgets because it has the majority of MPs. Because in 1980 during the time of Hilla Liman, the same Parliament agreed not to approve a budget presented to them" Mr. Kyei Mensah Bonsu stated.
He also denied the fact that Parliament, in the fourth republic has been too political in terms of approving loans and bills through the use of its majority of MPs to overcome the minority.
Mr. Mensah Bonsu added that, there have been instances where Parliament made amendments to some bills to ensure it was well thought of before approval.
