Human Rights Lawyer, Francis Xavier Sosu has stated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is not intimidated over the arrest of its National Communications Director, Sammy Gyamfi.

Sammy Gyamfi was arrested today(Monday) immediately he was done with a programme with Peace Fm and UTV.

As part of the Extended Legal Committee of the NDC, Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu did not know the reason for Sammy Gyamfi’s arrest.

However, it is rumoured that his arrest was in connection with a complaint of cyber crime lodged against the vociferous NDC official by the Presidency.

Addressing the media, the Lawyer said,”He came for a programme at Peace Fm/UTV and when he was done with it, about five men arrested and sent him to the CID Headquarters. As our colleague, we decided to follow up and we are hoping that he is granted bail from the beginning while the issue is sent to court.”

“We do not know the reason for his arrest, because for a National Communications Director of the NDC, in an election year, we will think someone is trying to intimidate us. NDC is talking against corruption, compilation of new voters’ registration, amongst others and we see this as those tactics to put fear in some people, but this is not how it is supposed to go,” he added.

Meanwhile, Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu urged the police to grant Sammy Gyamfi bail and send the matter to court as it is in accordance with the law.

“In a democracy, everyone can share their opinions and therefore we are not scared. The only tool you can take from a person is freedom of expression, that is why our constitution gives us the right to express ourselves, so with what they are doing, I think they want to intimidate us but as a party, we are not intimidated at all,” he said.

Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu added that,”No matter what happens, we hope the police work in accordance with the law; when you arrest someone, the law allows you to grant the persona bail, and then we will go to court over the issue.”
