Former President John Dramani Mahama, has urged Ghanaians to participate massively in the ongoing District Level Elections across the country.According to him, the District Level Elections has since its inception ensured grassroots participation in the governance of the country and wants all eligible Ghanaians to step out in their numbers to cast their votes.
“Through the unit committees and representation in the Assemblies, our people have had the opportunity to be directly involved in governance at the local level,” he reiterated in a Facebook post a while ago.
Ghanaians are today December 17, 2019 electing their Assembly Members and Unit Committee members across the country.
The exercise began from 7am and will end at 5pm.
This will happen simultaneously across the country with 57,030 candidates contesting this year’s elections.
Meanwhile, a total number of 48,000 security personnel have been deployed by the National Elections Security Task Force (NESTF) to support the Electoral Commission in providing security at polling stations and collation centers throughout the country for the local level elections.
The personnel were drawn from the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority.
Additionally, some personnel from the Ghana Armed Forces have also been deployed as a backup for the exercise.
They are on standby at strategic locations to provide support to the election taskforce.
A statement released in Accra on Monday, December 16, 2019, and signed by the Chairman, Media & Communications Sub Committee of the NESTF, David Eklu, assured the public that the election taskforce will ensure the smooth conduct of the District Assembly and Unit Committee elections “without let or hindrance”.
