Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has asserted that Ghanaians will soon evaluate the performance of the incoming administration, questioning whether it can deliver on its promises to transform the nation’s governance and reset the economy over the next four years.
Speaking in Parliament on January 3, 2025, following President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s final State of the Nation Address, Afenyo-Markin reflected on the New Patriotic Party (NPP)'s tenure and highlighted the challenges they faced, including the COVID-19 pandemic, which tested the resilience of governments globally.
“Today, we are being told there is new hope. That’s no problem; it is supposed to be so. But soon, we will see the true colours of the umbrella.
“We will be watching you for the next four years, and if indeed you have transformed, we will see with our naked eyes,” he added.
Afenyo-Markin also defended the achievements of the outgoing NPP government, noting that despite global economic difficulties, they maintained stability by ensuring government workers were paid, sustaining uninterrupted power supply, and facilitating access to education for over 5.7 million Ghanaians.
"This is a government that ensured that in spite of COVID, all government sector workers were paid. This is a government that kept the lights on. This is a government that ensured that over 5.7 million Ghanaians had access to education," he noted.
The outgoing Majority Leader reiterated his skepticism about the incoming government’s ability to fulfill its promises.
“I repeat, soon and very soon, the Ghanaian people will see the true colours of the umbrella. I rest my case.”
