Inspector General of Police David Asante-Apeatu, has said personnel of the Ghana Police Service did not storm Adentan to shoot at, or molest any law-abiding citizen during Thursday’s spontaneous riots which followed the killing of a student of the West Africa Senior High School (WASS) by a speeding car on the Madina-Adentan Highway that same day.

The police has been accused by the Convention People’s Party and other critics on social media, for using brute force in controlling the rioters.

The IGP, however, said: “It is one of our mandates to protect lives and property, and that is exactly the reason why we were here”, adding that the police were not deployed to the scene “to fire at anyone or cause any disaffection for the people”.

“We came here to maintain law and order and prevent people from causing damage to government property,” he added.

So far, 194 people have been killed on that road due to unusable footbridges, which compel pedestrians around that area to cross the multi-lane highway at the peril of their lives.
