President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the provision of a working pontoon is one of the important contributions of government to improve economic activities in Kpando.

Even though government provided the area with one pontoon earlier in 2016, it broke down and traders had to use long routes before they are able to transport their goods to other parts of the country.

Mr Mahama, who visited the area to inaugurate a US$13million water expansion project on Monday, October 17, as part of his five-day campaign tour of his party’s stronghold, revealed that government had to import new equipment to get the pontoon running for brisk economic engagements.

“Unfortunately, after we did the successful crossing, subsequently when the pontoon was operating, it hit a stump and the propeller was destroyed. We had to order a whole new engine and assembly for the pontoon. It took some time for the parts to arrive but it has been fixed and I hear this morning it has begun commercial operations again,” he indicated.

For him, the movement of agricultural produce between that part of the country to Eastern and Ashanti regions, was very important since the pontoon provides the shortest route to these locations.

Mr Mahama assured the people that “government will also construct the roads from Agordekeh through Donkorkrom across the Afram Plains “to the other pontoon so that traders from Kpando who are taking goods to Agordekeh or continuing to Kumasi can use the road and the other pontoon to Agogo and get to Kumasi”.

Mr Mahama’s campaign tour will see him visit at least 10 constituencies in the region.

He is optimistic that the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) will win the December 7 polls with a significant margin ahead of their main rivals, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
