Auditor-General Daniel Domelevo has blamed Ghanaians for the increasing rate of corruption.

According to him, corruption was still thriving because citizens have refused to take action.

He said corruption has become endemic.

He said although people have a perception about corruption, Ghanaians have come into contact with corruption before but failed to report it.

He said the report by the NCCE reflects what is on the ground and the truth we have to speak to ourselves is that Ghanaians are corrupt and have contributed to the endemic nature of the practice.

He was speaking at the 2nd National Dialogue on Public Accountability: Abuse of Office.

Daniel Domelevo, called for improvement in the laws and strict implementation of the rules to curb corruption.

On her part, Chairperson for the National Commission for Civic Education, Josephine Nkrumah expressed concern at the rate of abuse of power by government agencies and institutions.

“These accepted norms and practices properly constituting abuse of office have led to mediocrity and the weakening of institutions…while stagnating national development. It costs the national resources and money. It pronounces the vulnerability of public office that negates sound policies and takes away the objective of service delivery efficiency to drive socio-economic and democratic growth.”
