Presidential candidate of Independent People’s Party (IPP), Kofi Akpaloo, has backed the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) claim that the current voter register is not credible and cannot ensure free and fair polls.

However, he insisted that replacing the voter register with a fresh one would not solve the problem, indicating that the prevailing circumstances in the country would not guarantee a credible voter register.

Akpaloo stressed that Ghana urgently needs a centralised database which will automatically capture details of all nationals in the country before a credible voter register can be guaranteed.

“What we need now, as a country, is a centralised data system that would eventually lead to the provision of a credible voter register,” the outspoken politician pointed out.

He maintained that without a centralised data system, there is no way Ghana can have a credible voter register.

The IPP leader and founder therefore charged President Mahama and the NDC administration to make it their core duty to get a centralised database for Ghana, as pertains in the advanced world.

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, Akpaloo disclosed that the country would benefit immensely from a centralised database, especially in the provision of a credible voter register for the country.

He said the centralised data system would, for instance, make it possible for any Ghanaian that would turn 18 years to be automatically captured into the national voter register without difficulty.

According to him, with a centralised database, proper planning of the country would be easier for those at the helm of the political administration of the state at any given time.

Akpaloo noted again that budgeting and fighting the unemployment quandary in the country would also be easier since the state would be aware of the exact number of people who are unemployed at any given time.

Still on the benefits of the centralised database, the IPP leader noted that the collection of taxes from the working class would be easier and this could lead to the effective development of the nation.
