Minority leader of Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, has said he was attacked by a colleague member of the minority over media reports that he has been campaigning for the Majority leader in the upcoming parliamentary primaries of the ruling party.
Alban Bagbin, who has been in Parliament since 1993, is seeking re-election, but that has been met with stiff opposition within the rank and file of the NDC in the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency.
Media reports are rife that Mensah-Bonsu is earnestly campaigning and holding secret meetings on behalf of his colleague.
But speaking to Accra-based Okay FM on Wednesday, the Suame MP said reports that he is campaigning for the former health minister are false.
“I didn’t campaign for Bagbin. We were on an outreach program in the North and as part of my speech I said that Bagbin is a good material for parliament and that if the NDC intended to change him in their upcoming primaries, they should elect someone who is equally competent and not just anybody.
“People didn’t get the understanding and a female colleague of mine went about fuming at me for campaigning for Bagbin. She didn’t even wait to hear exactly what I said. I am sure if she gets to hear exactly what I said, she may change her position on the matter, but the truth is that I didn’t campaign for Bagbin. As a minority leader, the NPP constitution doesn’t allow me to do that,” he noted.
