All things being equal, the parliamentary candidate of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) for Amenfi West, Abraham Kojo Buadee, should be cruising to victory in today’s by-election in the constituency following the demise of the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, John Gyetuah, Today can report.
Although information picked up by Today indicates that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) as usual were inducing the electorate with money, and other freebies including machetes, rice, mattresses, clothes among other things just to vote for them.
However, these goodies appear not to have convinced the electorate to change their minds about their desire to vote for the PPP candidate.
For instance, in the case of NDC, apart from the gifts and monies which were being given to the voters, this paper learnt that with the express approval of President John Dramani Mahama, all bad roads in the constituency have been hurriedly tarred for the purpose of today’s by-election .
Today further learnt that one of the communities in the area, Mumuni, which over the years had been abandoned in terms of roads infrastructure, all of a sudden has seen its roads undergoing rehabilitation.
In addition to this, General Secretary of the ruling NDC government, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, reportedly told the people in the said community that President Dramani Mahama would do more for them after 2016 if they voted for the NDC’s candidate.
But speaking to the PPP National Secretary, Murtala Mohammed, in an interview via telephone yesterday, he told Today that, the PPP was not the least perturbed by the rough tactics and political machinations of the NDC and the NPP “because the voters here were fed up with their disappointments and lies.”
Describing the PPP’s candidate as a “home-boy” he said though anything was possible in an election, he was, however, optimistic that his party’s candidate would pull a surprise to the amazement of the voting population of the country as well as political pundits who have written off the PPP.
According to him, the PPP candidate has what it takes to bring the needed development to the area.
When asked why he was so certain that a new political history would be written as far as the Amenfi by-election in the country was concerned, he said, “Ghanaians are more awake and will not continue to allow those political sycophants to deceive them.”
He condemned what he claimed was fast becoming a phenomenon in Ghana’s politics where politicians use money to buy votes, and advised Ghanaian electorate not to fall for such undemocratic schemes and antics of some politicians.
