When the government started issuing fixed-income instruments (domestic bonds) at 24.5%, I warned that the Ghanaian economy will collapse. At that time, the USA was keeping yields on fixed income products around 2%.
The 24.5% yield on the bonds issued by the Ghana government meant that only the banks and rich individuals, mostly foreigners, bought those bonds.
Individual businesses in the country could not afford loans (credit) for their businesses. The Ghana cedis started to fall against all major currencies. The end result is what we see today.
These high yield bonds also known as junk bonds on the financial markets, contributed to the downfall of the Mahama administration.
The Mahama administration just doesn't have knowledgeable financial experts (money managers) and good economists on their team.
