The 2012 Presidential candidate of the CPP, Dr Abu Sakara has given explanations to why he refused to contest the 2016 elections after he gave indications of his intentions to contest that election.
Abu Sakara was the 2008 Vice Presidential candidate of the CPP and later became flag bearer of the party in 2012 general election.
In a statement, released in January last year, Dr Sakara explained that he had arrived at the decision following months of “contemplation” and “consultations” to go independent and break away from the CPP.
Speaking in a recent interview with Ghanaweb, he explained that even though he made known his desire to go Independent in the 2016 polls, he was not on the ballot as the "duopoly" of NPP and NDC in the country’s politics can not be undermined.
He further stated that it will be difficult for any political party to defeat these two parties (NPP and NDC) in any election.
According to him the duopoly can only be broken by a group of non-partisan individuals.
“After consulting quite a number of friends, well wishers and people who were searching for those solutions that will move us forward, we came to a conclusion that another presidential candidate on the ticket was not what was going to contribute effectively to what we want to see because the parties that were neither NDC or NPP all together had less than 1.1%.”
Abu Sakara noted that he has been absent from the scene because he has dedicated his time to farming.
