Press Release

STATEMENT BY THE NPP ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMMEMORATION OF THE 70TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF UGCC

Tomorrow, the 4th of August, 2017 marks exactly 70 years of the founding of the first political movement (party) in our country, the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), which spearheaded the social agitation that eventually culminated in our independence in 1957. And so, as the nation commemorates this historic day, the NPP, which is a ‘descendent party’ of the UGCC, joins the rest of the world in eulogizing the founding fathers of the UGCC and for that matter the key architects of Ghana’s independence struggle for their legendary sacrifices in honour of country.

The party wishes to, on this milestone occasion, extol the enviable virtues and sacrifices of these forebears of our national struggle including J.B. Danquah, Paa Grant, William Ofori-Atta, Obetsebi Lamptey, Hon. Edward Akufo-Addo, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, V.B. Annan, Oheneba Sakyi Djan, Hon. Akilakpa Sawyer, Hon. N.A. Ollenu, Councilor E.A. Bossman, K.B. Teko, Enoch Mensah, Q. Tagoe, Councilor W.Q.M. Halm, Quist Therson, Councilor Richard Akwei, E.C. Quist, Ben A. Tamakloe, Councilor G.N. Alema, Joe Myers, Dr. F.V. Nanka Bruce, E.C.A. Quarshie, Dr. J.E. Armah, Solomon Odamtten and many others.

We salute the illustrious works of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the independence struggle. Nkrumah, who was at some point, invited to join the struggle by the UGCC leadership and appointed as the General Secretary of the party, undoubtedly, played a leading role in the struggle for self-government together with his compatriots in the UGCC and the CPP.

It is very instructive that the commemoration of the 70th Anniversary of the founding of the United Gold Coast Convention is happening at a time we have one of the finest proponents of the UGCC political tradition, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as the President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces. The coincidence is indeed most instructive.

The NPP is much pleased to be collaborating with the government of Ghana and in particular, the “GHANA 60 YEARS ON PLANNING COMMITTEE” to make this commemoration, a momentous one. As part of activities earmarked for this event, there would be an ANNIVERSARY LECTURE to be delivered by the Speaker of Parliament, Right Honourable Professor Mike A. Oquaye on the topic, “4th August; Ghana’s Day of Destiny” at the National Theatre, Accra at exactly 6:00pm.

This would however be preceded by a MEMORIAL AND THANKSGIVING SERVICE in honour of our forebears and national heroes, which would be observed at Saltpond in the Central Region; a town, that hosted the Headquarters of the UGCC. His Excellency President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo would be gracing the two events [Anniversary Lecture and Memorial Service] as the GUEST OF HONOUR. There would also be the laying of wreaths at the tombs of these founding fathers.

The organizing committee for the ‘Memorial and Thanksgiving Service’ would be making at least four buses available to convey sympathizers to and fro Saltpond. These buses would be stationed at the NPP Headquarters and the Ministry of Information. People who wish to attend the event are entreated to be in all-white attire. The buses would set off at 8:00am on Friday, 4th August, 2017.

Finally, the NPP wishes to use this occasion to call on Ghanaians to, at all times, exude high spirit of patriotism and nationalism, hard work and dedication, adherence to rule of law and democratic principles, freedom and liberty, commitment to duty and unwavering love for country, which were the ideals of the UGCC.

…Signed…

John Boadu

General Secretary (Ag)
