The Greater Accra regional election of the New Patriotic Party came to a standstill after supporters of the aspiring candidates engaged in a heated argument.

The heavy security presence did little to calm hot tempers as the entire atmosphere was characterised with chaos and confrontation.

As being carried out throughout the nation, delegates of the NPP in the Greater Accra Regional met yesterday Saturday, April 21, to elect the regional executives to lead the party for the next four years.

In a video captured by GhanaWeb at the Trade Fair Center in Accra where the elections were held, some of the delegates as well as the aspirants seen being prevented from voting because of the confusion that rocked the place.

A voice from the PA system was telling the delegates and the aspirants that voting cannot be continued unless they go back.

“We can’t continue in this confusion, everybody should go back”

It’s unclear what might started the confusion but some of the delegates, as well as some aspirants, were seen in heated arguments but with the timely intervention, the security officer’s things may have gotten out of hand.

The Greater Accra Regional elections saw Divine Otoo Agorhom won 276 votes whilst Alfred Boye acting regional chairman of the NPP had 269 votes out of the total valid vote of 611.

Mr Agorhom was a three-time parliamentary candidate for the Sege constituency and a former 1st vice chairman of Greater Accra Region.

Swearing in the newly elected executives, National Youth Organizer for the NPP, Sammy Awuku urged the executives to work with all to seal the unity in the party.

According to him, this was necessary to help the party win the general elections in 2020.

“We are happy with the success recorded here. Our delegates conducted themselves very well. We know at some point tempers were high but for the sake of peace, you continued to tolerate each other.

To the candidates who won it is our prayer that you will be magnanimous in victory and those who lost will be gracious in defeat. You won’t win all the time, in this our politics even your chairman has lost several battles before but today he is chairman of Greater Accra. Let’s all work together for the greater good of our party.”

The newly elected regional chairman called for support from the other executives.
