Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo is in the company of top NDC executives
The chairman of Ghana’s main opposition National Democratic Congress Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo has honoured an invitation by the police amidst heavy security.
The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service last week invited Ofosu-Ampofo over a leaked tape in which he allegedly made some wild statements.
Ofosu-Ampofo, in the leaked tape could be heard saying his approach to elections and security had changed completely in the wake of the violence that characterised the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
He further noted as the NDC’s strategy to regain power in 2020 lives of some members of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be targeted. “We will go after them,” he said.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo was also heard on the leaked tape at a meeting giving directive for the EC chairperson Jean Mensa “to be taken to the cleaners.” He also endorsed the hurling of insults on the National Peace Council chairman Rev. Emmanuel Asante.
The CID’s invitation of Mr Ofosu-Ampofo followed the department’s interception of the leaked tape, ASP David Eklu Director-General Public Affairs said in a news release.
On Monday, he was accompanied by top party executives to the Police Headquarters to assist with investigations. He is in the company of prominent lawyer Tony Lithur and former Attorney General Marietta Brew.
The police have beefed up security at its headquarters, according to our reporters, to forestall any disorder.
Meanwhile, the NDC has strongly denied the contents of the leaked tape. In a statement of its own, the NDC described the leaked tape involving its national chairman as “concocted and false.”
“The NDC states for the records that the statements and attributions contained on the said tape are concocted and false. They are inconsistent with the character and track record of Chairman Ofosu Ampofo and do not reflect the values he has always stood for,” the NDC’s Director of communications Sammy Gyamfi said.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for Ofosu-Ampofo’s resignation.
