Over 3,000 delegates are set to attend the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) National Delegates Congress slated for May 25, at Ho in the Volta Region, to elect its Flagbearer for Elections 2020.
The LPG Delegates Congress would also elect its national executive to steer affairs in accordance with the Party’s Constitution, Mr Jerry A. Owusu, LPG National Organiser, told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra on Wednesday.
Mr Owusu said preparation towards the LPG Congress was progressing, stressing that delegates would include members of the National Executive Council, Founding Members, Council of Elders, and Constituency Executives.
Other delegates expected to participate are; two other representatives from each Constituency, at least one of whom must be a woman, a representative from each of the Universities and other Tertiary institutions, and two representatives from each Overseas branch approved by the Central Committee.
He said the LPG National Delegates Congress shall be presided over by a member of the Council of Elders appointed for the purpose by the National Executive Council.
Mr Owusu noted that the Congress would also elect the National Chairman, three National Vice-Chairmen, the General Secretary, the National Treasurer, Presidential Candidate, the National Organiser, the National Women Organiser and the National Youth Organiser.
He said the Congress would also consider and approve the LPG’s ideological stand, Election 2020 Manifesto, and matters of general policy submitted to it by the National Executive Council.
The Congress would also receive and consider reports on activities and audited accounts of the Party presented to it by the National Executive Council and issue directives for actions on them, and confirm, amend, repudiate or revoke any decision made by any subordinate organ of the Party.
He said the LPG Congress also have the power to amend its Constitution in the manner provided, decide on any proposals or matters, and transact any other business, which shall be duly submitted to the Congress by any organ of the Party.
The LPG National Organiser explained that, they had already elected the constituency and regional executives in 2018, indicating that 2,785 officers, made up of constituency and regional executives were already in office.
He said LPG was fervently preparing towards Elections 2020, therefore it had tasked its rank and file especially the Constituency, Regional and National Executives to work towards building the grass-roots foundation of the Party in order to position it for the Party’s rigorous campaign.
Mr Owusu explained that LPG was committed to the view that the dignity of each individual man and woman was the cardinal principle of democratic society and the primary purpose of all political organization and activity in such a society.
“The LPG is dedicated to the principles of individual freedom, responsibility and human dignity in the framework of a just society, and political freedom in the framework of meaningful participation by all persons,” he said.
He said the Party was also committed to the pursuit of equality of opportunity for all persons, to the enhancement of Ghana’s unique and diverse cultural community.
He said the Liberal Party of Ghana subscribes to the fundamental rights and freedoms of persons under the rule of law and commits itself to the protection of these essential values and their constant adaptation to the changing needs of modern Ghanaian society.
Mr Owusu explained that the LPG also recognises that human dignity in a democratic system required that all citizens have access to full information concerning the policies and leadership.
He said “we also seek to offer opportunity to Ghanaians in open and public assessment of such means, and such modifications of policies and leadership as they deem desirable to promote the political, economic, social, cultural and general well-being of Ghanaians”.
“LPG strives to provide a flexible and democratic structure whereby all Ghanaians can obtain such information, participate in such assessment and militate for such reform through open communications, free dialogue and participatory action both electoral and non-electoral,” Mr Owusu stated.
