The Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Wednesday extended warm felicitations to all comrades who constitute the workforce of Ghana.
The CPP in solidarity with workers on the commemoration the 2019 May Day observed that “No nation or organization has prospered without an active working population. We salute Ghanaian workers wherever they are, home and abroad, private or public”.
The CPP in a statement signed by Mr James Kwabena Bomfeh Junior, the Acting General Secretary and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra acknowledged the security forces who are in many ways kept out of the scope of organized labour, “they form part of workers even if they are sensitive in nature”.
The CPP said from the very foundations of knitting this nation together, the place of workers has been established.
“It was in recognition of the role and phenomenal contribution of workers that the founding President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah donated on behalf of the State to workers the Trades Union Congress, TUC headquarters in Accra to coordinate and administer the affairs of the union.
“In a similar vein, the TUC as an integral part of the CPP offered a dissenting voice when it mattered in the unifying and depolarizing days of the One-Party state properly decided by the people of Ghana”.
The statement said the CPP as party sees workers concerns and interests as part of the objects to which it operates.
The CPP said the era of unguided noisy agitations are over and, in their place, diplomacy filled with tolerance for diversity pervades.
“We call on the workers of Ghana never to remain silent or act with impunity but to express their views in a respectable and appealing tone. Never must anyone trample on the rights of workers and go unpunished or unquestioned.
“While advancing the rights of workers, we urge them to be responsible in carrying out their part in building the nation.
“Rights come with responsibilities and it is incumbent on our labour front to be conscious of that. Workers must not only be concerned with the material gains of salary increases or bonuses but they must also seek training and retraining to add to their knowledge and skills to compete better in today’s ever competitive job market,” the CPP stated.
According to the CPP the on-going national identification exercise should help in building accurate and reliable data on workers in Ghana. It is only when we have reliable data that planning becomes easy and inures to our benefit.
In saluting workers, the CPP desires to see government working to the interest of Ghanaian workers especially in budgeting, signing contracts and enforcing the Labour Law.
Government owes that duty to the workers and citizenry at large to ensure a harmonious relationship among our people especially from the bullying hands of some expatriate employers.
