Central Region PTAs appeal to NAGRAT to resume work

Cape Coast, Oct 19, GNA - Members of the interim executive committee of the Central Region Parent -Teacher Associations (PTAs) on Thursday appealed to members of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) to resume work. The association made up of PTAs in second cycle schools in the region also echoed calls on the leadership of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) and NAGRAT to iron out their differences and "move together with a common goal of enhancing the development of education in the country".

The committee made the appeal in a statement signed by Mr Kwesi Cab-Addae, the Interim Chairman, Mr Moses Amoah-Ampah, the Vice Chairman and Joseph Amoah, Secretary, after an emergency meeting. The statement said it was not the intention of the committee to apportion blame but rather its concern was to avoid the waste of resources and the break down of discipline.

"There is the need to ensure that students who have reported for the 2006/2007 academic year, were properly taken care of". It recalled a similar strike action by NAGRAT last year and said members later resumed work, following a "peace deal" in the form of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) reached between all parties concerned. It however expressed regret that causes or reasons for the NAGRAT's action last year have re-surfaced this year and that it was "gradually becoming a yearly ritual." The statement expressed the hope that there would be a permanent solution to the impasse this time round and urged all parties and stakeholders to bury their differences and ensure that ultimately the primary goal for which the educational institutions were set up was smoothly achieved." 19 Oct 06
